Regarding:turning young inexperienced drivers into safe ones.
I think the 120 hours on a learners permit is a great idea but it is unobtainable for some people. The cost of professional lessons is too high for many learners which means most rely on family members or friends. This can result in young drivers picking up others bad habits. The extra 2 years displaying a green P plate is not going to make a safer driver. I am a 34 year old P plater and have had enough of been harassed by fully licenced drivers who seem to think they have the right to try to intimidate P platers who are actually doing the right thing. With me, it doesnt work. I am quite used to been tailgated, highbeamed and abused. I have had other drivers (P platers and fully licenced drivers) overtake me in the most dangerous manner. I can see how a younger person may feel bullied into doing the wrong thing just to avoid having to deal with these people. Yes there are P platers out there that drive like maniacs but those drivers will not stop their bad behaviour just because they get a full licence. The only benefit as far as I can see with a green P plate is that if you are doing more than 100km’s on the freeway and the police see you, you may be caught and fined.
